Two niche newspaper titles printed by Lincolnshire-based Mortons Print Ltd have received awards at the Production Journal 2019 news awards.

The Hackney Citizen was named the best Niche Market Newspaper of the Year at the awards, held on Wednesday, May 8 at the Royal Lancaster London, while the design-led title The Essential Journal was highly commended in the same category.

The judges focused on three main criteria – how successfully the publication appealed to and engaged with its readership, how well the content was supported by production quality, and whether there was evidence of commercial innovation.  The Hackney Citizen was described by judges as “a stand-out publication, with perfect repro quality and superb printing on bright stock”.

The Essential Journal, said the judges, had “bags of content and a luxury feel”. It was, they said, eye-catching and stunning, and clean and bright with plenty of white space.

Steve Wickwar, print director of Mortons Media Group Ltd, said: “I’m absolutely thrilled that Mortons Print was able to help secure first and second place in this prestigious award category. Mortons Print prides itself on the consistent quality and high standards of work which reflect in this year’s awards.”

Mortons Print was also commended in the Regional Newspaper Printer of the Year category, for the Stratford-upon-Avon Herald and the Teesdale Mercury, which judges said had “real richness, with some particularly sharp photographic reproduction”.
